Present the defendant's background: childhood, education, employment, family, military service, and community involvement. Address the offense conduct with appropriate acceptance of responsibility. Present mitigating factors under 18 U.S.C. 3553(a) (federal) or equivalent state statute: nature of the offense, history and characteristics of the defendant, need for the sentence to reflect just punishment, deterrence, protection of the public, and rehabilitation. Include letters of support from family, employers, and community members.
