Employers must establish a program and utilize procedures for disabling machinery or equipment to prevent the release of hazardous energy during servicing and maintenance activities. Lockout or tagout devices must be applied to energy isolating devices to prevent unexpected energization.

The standard requires training for authorized employees who perform lockout/tagout, affected employees who work in areas where lockout/tagout is used, and other employees who work in the area. Periodic inspections of energy control procedures must be conducted at least annually.
