When the President declares a major disaster or emergency, FEMA coordinates federal assistance to state, tribal, territorial, and local governments. Public Assistance provides grants for debris removal, emergency protective measures, and permanent restoration of public infrastructure.
Individual Assistance provides grants to individuals and households for temporary housing, home repairs, and other disaster-related needs. The Hazard Mitigation Grant Program funds projects that reduce the risk of future disaster damage.
