These regulations set legally enforceable standards for drinking water quality. They apply to public water systems and establish maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) for microorganisms, disinfectants, organic chemicals, inorganic chemicals, and radionuclides.
Public water systems must monitor their water quality and report results to customers annually. Systems that violate standards must notify their customers and take corrective action.
