These standards establish requirements for general industry workplaces covering walking-working surfaces, means of egress, powered platforms, occupational health and environmental controls, hazardous materials, personal protective equipment, general environmental controls, medical and first aid, fire protection, compressed gas, materials handling, machinery and machine guarding, hand and portable tools, welding, electrical safety, and toxic and hazardous substances.

Employers must assess workplace hazards and provide appropriate protective measures including training, equipment, and procedures.
