A prescription for a controlled substance may only be issued by a practitioner who is authorized to prescribe and has a valid DEA registration. Schedule II prescriptions must be written (not phoned in) and cannot be refilled. Schedule III-V prescriptions may be oral, written, or faxed and may be refilled up to five times within six months.
Electronic prescribing of controlled substances is permitted under specific requirements including identity proofing, two-factor authentication, and use of certified applications. All prescriptions must include the patient's name and address, drug name, strength, dosage form, quantity, and directions for use.
