DOT-regulated employers must conduct drug and alcohol testing of safety-sensitive transportation employees in aviation, trucking, railroads, mass transit, pipelines, and other transportation industries. Testing is required pre-employment, randomly, after accidents, upon reasonable suspicion, and upon return to duty.

The testing panel includes marijuana, cocaine, opiates, amphetamines, and phencyclidine. Alcohol testing uses evidential breath testing devices. Medical Review Officers evaluate positive results, and Substance Abuse Professionals conduct assessments for violations.
