Respiratory Protection

Employers must establish and maintain a respiratory protection program for employees required to use respirators. The program must include procedures for selecting respirators, medical evaluations, fit testing, proper use, and maintenance. Employers must provide respirators at no cost to employees.

Employers must first implement feasible engineering and administrative controls to reduce airborne exposures before requiring respirator use. The standard establishes assigned protection factors for different types of respirators.
